Consumer purchases of men's apparel in 1998 got a good start with sales in the first quarter up 6.7 percent over the comparable period a year ago. Men's wear led all other apparel sectors in gains for the period.

Department stores, specialty stores and factory outlets all had better sales performance for men's than a year ago.

The strong showing was based on increased spending by both the most affluent households and those in the lower middle class -- households with incomes from $15,000 to $24,999. Both these sectors showed double-digit increases in the first quarter, 16 percent and 27 percent respectively.
