Mars is icy. Venus sizzles. Earth is just right.
What makes the temperatures on these planets so different? Part of the answer is that planets close to the Sun are warmer than those that are far away. Another piece of the answer is the greenhouse effect.
To see this effect for yourself, try this experiment. You'll need a small thermometer, a drinking glass big enough to hold the thermometer, a piece of black paper, and a sunny day.
Lay the paper on a fiat, stable surface in the sun. Turn the glass upside down, and place it on the paper with the thermometer inside the glass.
