Understanding of latex allergy slowly unravels, but damages awarded to a latex allergic medical worker in the US indicate glove makers may suffer in court
Latex protein allergy is a problem which has no simple solution. And the recent award of $1 million damages by a Milwaukee, Wisconsin jury against Smith & Nephew AHP Inc. in a product liability lawsuit involving latex gloves has complicated the issue further (see p4).
Glove manufacturers, "are responding to the need for low-protein NR latex gloves," said Dr Paul Cacioli, director of research with Ansell Healthcare in Malacca, Malaysia, speaking at a meeting on latex protein allergy in Paris, 7 Jan, 1998.
