The status of the history of economic thought in the profession has been the subject of study and speculation. The history of economic thought has increasingly been eliminated as a required or elective course at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; a recent study reports that this decline is accelerating [Aslanbeigui and Naples 1997]. Others provide conflicting reports as to whether the general journals have been relatively uninterested in the field [Schabas 1992] or have been publishing more such articles over time [Patinkin 1992].
