His moves built a champion and his words destroyed a career, and now Al Campanis will forever have two faces in baseball history.

A Dodger for four decades, he died Sunday of coronary artery disease at his Fullerton home. He was 81. He is survived by his sons Jim and George, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services are pending.

Campanis was the team's general manager from 1968-87, his desire and passion for the game allowing him to have a life in baseball despite his limited playing skills. An overmatched infielder, he batted .100 during a major-league career that lasted only 20 at-bats.
