A Higher Education Funding Council scheme is helping universities to provide training that could make engineers more employable. Julia Pierce reports
ALTHOUGH there are tentative signs that economic conditions may be improving, for some engineers renewed confidence has come too late to save their jobs. Sectors such as the automotive industry have borne the brunt of job losses, leaving a pool of highly skilled individuals whose experience is nevertheless unsuitable for transfer into other areas of engineering, many of which are still facing a shortage of candidates.
