Article: VALUE LIBRARY FOR BOOKS AND SERVICES, NOT EDIFICE.(SUNDAY OPINION)(Letter to the editor)

The value of a library lies in its books and services.

We do not need a brand new edifice in Madison costing millions of dollars to maintain a first-class library. It's not necessary to delight our eyes and our senses with an architectural marvel.

To insist that it is, is something like mistaking a gilded frame for the beautiful painting within it. It sends a disturbing "let them eat cake" message to the many who are suffering economic hardship, and is absolutely inappropriate in these difficult times.

We should act like grown ups rather than adolescents obsessing over erecting a castle in Madison. We should make the best and most of what we ...
