IT may seem like a recipe for terminal indigestion. But it seems badgers have developed a taste for hedgehogs. Researchers believe the booming badger population may be responsible for the alarming decline in hedgehogs over the last few years.

Not only do badgers compete for the same food as hedgehogs, but they hunt and eat their spiky rivals.

The findings come in a study which shows a close geographical link between the decline of hedgehogs and the presence of badgers. Researcher Dr Anouschka Hof, of Royal Holloway University of London, estimates there are about a million hedgehogs in Britain.
