Report shows workplace deaths up in 2008
Virginia workplaces were a little deadlier last year, according to a report released last week by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. Occupational deaths in the state rose 5.5 percent in 2008.
The Virginia Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries provided a preliminary total of 154 workplace-related deaths in the state last year, up from 146 in 2007. The 2008 figure is 17 percent lower than the past decade's high of 186 deaths in 2005.
Workers in the transportation industry represented the largest single group of those who died from job-related incidents, at 52 deaths, or 34 percent. That includes ...
