Report shows workplace deaths up in 2008

Virginia workplaces were a little deadlier last year, according to a report released last week by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. Occupational deaths in the state rose 5.5 percent in 2008.

The Virginia Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries provided a preliminary total of 154 workplace-related deaths in the state last year, up from 146 in 2007. The 2008 figure is 17 percent lower than the past decade's high of 186 deaths in 2005.
