The B oy S couts and custodial workers in the audience at the Sept. 8 City Council meeting got a special treat: an invocation by a Hindu priest.
The invocation from Shastry Dilip Upadhyaya, the priest at the Hindu Temple and Community Center of Hampton Roads, came just months after the council was criticized for allowing opening prayers that frequently referenced Jesus Christ.
The city responded by saying that it regularly invited religious leaders from all faiths.
Upadhyaya was invited June 30, after the city was first criticized by a group that advocates for the separation of church and state.
