Certainly not as long as Mount Jefferson's dome has cast its morning shadow over this little town. Nor as long as the century-old brick stores have lined Main Street. But longer than The Parkway, opened in 1947, has shown movies. That's how long Ashe County Cheese, which Kraft Corp. started in West Jefferson in 1930, has been in business. North Carolina's only cheese factory has had several owners since the food conglomerate sold it in 1975. Wisconsin-based Newburg Corners Cheese Inc., owned by Mike Everhart and Tom Torkelson, bought it 15 years ago, and Everhart came down South to run it.
