THE prospect of a tidal power scheme on the Mersey Estuary has moved a step closer with the launch of a feasibility study into plans - and a new pounds 22m fund to support marine renewable energy.
David Kidney, the energy and climate change minister, announced the new funding pot at the Renewable Energy Association's Wave and Tidal Technology Symposium at Leasowe Castle, in Wirral, yesterday.
He said: "A big challenge for the sector is moving marine energy technology through to a commercial stage.
"The Marine Renewables Proving Fund is designed to support and accelerate the demonstration of cutting-edge devices.
