Many outdoorsmen and women don't realize what they have until it's gone.
That could be the case with the county-run, Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery in Elbridge unless Onondaga County lawmakers, SUNY ESF officials -- or somebody, or some group -- takes steps to lock it into place.
Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney announced this past week in her proposed budget that the county's involvement in the hatchery will end.
It's not cast in concrete. Mahoney confirmed talks with SUNY ESF officials to assume some responsibility for the hatchery have taken place, but nothing has been decided.
