In his newest book, Shinichi Kitaoka, a well-known scholar and leading historian of modern Japanese history, sheds light on an enduring secret of Japan's economic miracle in the post-World War II era - the emergence and maintenance of its ruling political party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Contrary to predictions that were prevalent when the LDP came into being in 1955, the party remained in power until 1993, when the Morihiro Hosokawa-led reform coalition took control. For 38 years, the LDP maintained a low-key leadership style while focusing on economic rather than ideological issues.
