Santiago de Cuba's Antonio Maceo International Airport (SCU) is one of the busiest and largest on the island.

Built in 1954 with a 4,600-foot, N-S airstrip for small planes, the airport gradually outgrew its capacities and received a major upgrade in the 1970s. That's when a new E-W runway measuring 13,130 feet long and 148 feet side was completed to accommodate larger transcontinental passenger jets.
