There's a lot to be gained from losing almost 1,000 pounds of your work force. Sure, there's the hope of reigning in health care costs, but there's also the benefit of having thinner, healthier and more energetic employees on your payroll.

That's what Arthur Middleton Capital Holdings Inc., a direct-response marketing company based in Stark County, discovered with its weight-loss competition this year. Of the company's 900 or so employees, 132 participated. By the end, the group had shed a total of 924 pounds--an average of 7 pounds per participating employee.
