Over the past ten years, I have learned about womanist theology and ethics and attended conferences at every opportunity to listen to sisters talk about womanist perspectives.
In the beginning, these experiences invigorated me, and I could not wait to get back home and discuss them with other African American women. I pulled together study sessions, seminars, and sermons for African American women at the church I served and proclaimed the liberating power of being a womanist.
To my dismay, I was met with curious looks, head shaking, tongue-in-cheek comments, and "Child, that's what happens when they go to seminary. At least she ain't trying to be a ...
