Sustainability is an elusive term, especially in the business world. Some people see sustainability as the next new thing, like information technology or biotechnology in decades past. To others, it is a business practice, akin to Six Sigma, another way to think about improving business processes and profitability.
It came into fashion when businesses that had focused on being green or socially responsible such as those making and selling recycled products or organic foods found that their actions could be justified, or sustained, because they had broader consequences that were financially sound.
