Introduction
Due to the increased number of elderly individuals with musculoskeletal diseases in developed countries including Japan (WHO Scientific Group 2003), a variety of group-based exercise regimens for the elderly have been proposed (Ades et al 1996, Ettinger et al 1997, Suzuki et al 2004). Among these, progressive resistance exercise has been shown to improve muscle strength and gait speed (Latham et al 2004). However, adverse effects are a major concern for elderly people undertaking exercise.
