BOSTON - Gov. Deval L. Patrick has named Paul G. Kirk Jr., a veteran Democratic power broker, former D.C. lobbyist and close friend to the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, to serve as U.S. senator until January, when voters will decide who will serve out the remaining three years of Mr. Kennedy's term.
The governor announced the selection at the Statehouse yesterday with Mr. Kirk by his side and Mr. Kennedy's widow, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and Mr. Kennedy's son, Edward M. Kennedy Jr., in the front row of the crowded press room.
