There are conflicting reports regarding the relationship of labor supply and substance abuse (Zanis et al. 2001; MacDonald & Pudney 2000; Swartz, Lurigio & Goldstein 2000; Kidorf et al. 1998; Zanis, Metzger & McLellan 1994; Segest, Mygind & Bay 1990; Peck & Plant 1986). Gender has also been shown to be a cofactor when evaluating labor supply and substance abuse. For men, substance dependence has been related to both lower employment rate and lesser work hours. For women, substance dependence was related to employment rate consistently but not to work hours (Bray et al. 2000).
