3, 4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA or Ecstasy) is a synthetic amphetamine analogue. It is well known as a substance of abuse and carries the reputation of producing euphoria, mild hallucinatory effects and a sense of emotional empathy. Although originally synthesized in by Merk in 1914, the psychoactive properties of MDMA were not widely known until the late 1960s. By the year 2000 between 5% and 10% of American college students reported Ecstasy use (Strote, Lee & Wechsler 2002).
