THE Government has spent e7.2m on a scheme to provide air access to remote Inishbofin Island off Co. Galway - but because it failed to put in a fire station, planes can't use the two-year-old runway.
Talks about the project began in the Eighties and the airstrip was due to open this year. However, it is still uncompleted.
Plans by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to provide air access to Inishbofin, which has a population of just 200, have proven controversial. The island is already served by 40-minute ferry journeys to and from Cleggan and the flights would take around 10 minutes, not including ...
