Lean production, known originally as the Toyota production system, has been familiar to many people in the United States for 20 years. New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota that uses lean production concepts, was formed in the 1980s. Other Japanese companies, including Toyota, Nissan, and Denso, have built plants in the U.S. using lean production systems. These "transplants" have encouraged their American suppliers to quickly adapt lean production concepts so that a higher level of integration can occur between the assembly operations and the suppliers.
