The stark, fluorescent-white sun wraps southern Arizona with its blazing luminosity. It is 110 degrees Fahrenheit today. The thick walls of our adobe house do not protect us from such heat, for last night was not cool enough. The air conditioning is broken. Inescapable light, inescapable heat! A relentless question pops into my mind: Why are we living in the desert? How can dwellings resist such intensity? If we are to live here, what is the appropriate enclosure for the desert citizen of the twenty-first century? Should we live in caves or in tents?
