It has been a big year for El Nino. Last June, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a short press release that stated simply, "Strong El Nino conditions are currently developing in the tropical Pacific. The warm event will bring wetter, cooler weather for the southern half of the United States from November through March, while the northern part of the country from Washington east to the western Great Lakes will experience warmer than normal temperatures" (see http://www.noaa.gov/public-affairs/pr97/jun97/noaa97-37.html).
