Legend has it that in 1727, the governor of the northern states of Maranhao and Para in Brazil commissioned Major Francisco de Mello Palheta to visit French Guiana, ostensibly to resolve frontier problems between the two countries. Palheta's secret mission, however, was to get his hands on the fruit that, according to information relayed to the governor, possessed great commercial value.
