Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor, is to seek a coalition deal with the Free Democrats (FDP) within weeks, after her ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) won Sunday's general election.
Merkel said an alliance with the pro-business FDP could lead to tax cuts in 2011 but rejected spending cuts that she said might strangle the country's fledgling economic recovery.
The election result should allow the CDU to end its awkward four-year-old partnership with the left-wing Social Democrats (SPD) and allow Merkel to implement more of her party's policies.
