When John Bassett took me on a tour of the campus of Clark University recently, I had no idea that he was going to step down from the presidency of the school any time soon. He seemed very much at home and at ease at the institution he has been running for nearly a decade.

He took pride in showing me the state-of-the-art Lasry Center for Bioscience and the renovated biophysics building, manifestations of his strong emphasis on research and science education. We paused at Blackstone Hall, the new apartment-style residence complex nearby. ("It makes a difference in recruitment," he said.)
