The Philippine government says the death toll from flooding caused by tropical storm Ketsana has risen to 240 as rescue teams continue to pull bodies from swollen rivers and debris-strewn streets.

The government has called for international help, amid warnings that it may not have sufficient resources to withstand another storm that forecasters say is brewing east of the country and could hit as early as Friday.

Tropical storm Ketsana, which struck the northern Philippines on Saturday, dumped more than a month of rain in just 12 hours, triggering the worst flooding to hit the country in more than 40 years.
