After fire broke out aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington off South America in 2008, Navy brass decided the ship should head to San Diego for emergency repairs.
Local employees at BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair, General Dynamics Nassco, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and Pacific Ship Repair and Fabrication--as well as smaller contractors--had to drop whatever they were doing because their major customer suddenly had a big problem on its hands.
Unlike Navy ports in Hawaii, New Hampshire, Virginia and Washington, San Diego has no Navy shipyard. The job of tending the port's 50 surface ships, plus the carriers, falls to private industry.
