Indonesia has a number of milk producers but the country still continued to imports milk and imports have tended to increase in volume. Indonesia still is heavily dependent on imports for milk. Around 67% of the country's requirement of 1.5 billion liters of milk in 2008 were supplied through imports.

Dairy cows farmers in Indonesia could produce only around 500 million liters of fresh milk per year. Imports of fresh milk, therefore, are needed to be processed in the country into powdered milk, sweet condensed milk, yoghurt, butter, cheese, candies, etc.
