With the proper formulation, wollastonite offers the benefits of cost control and improvements in color, shrinkage control and strength.
Wollastonite (calcium metasilicate, CaSi[O.sub.3]) is already known and generally accepted as a powerful fluxing component in whiteware production, especially for glazes and single fast-fire whitewares. Its very low loss-on-ignition (L.O.I.) advantage over calcium carbonate is widely accepted, and because of this, wollastonite is often used for pinhole reduction, especially in colors.
