The bad news: Syracuse still has big problems with its water and sewage systems. The good news: Big New Ideas on the horizon could solve them. The challenge: getting from here to there.
Like other Rust Belt cities, Syracuse's aging water pipes are costly to replace -- and maintain. Syracuse's system has allowed raw sewage and rainwater runoff to mingle and flow into Onondaga Lake.
Syracuse and Onondaga County tackled the sewage problem in 1998, but under a federal consent order. Some $346 million -- much of it federal aid -- has gone to update the sewage system and build a new treatment and holding facility at Midland Avenue, and there were plans for ...
