The expense of complying with the Payment Card Industry's Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is driving CSOs to investigate practical ways to reduce scope, thereby reducing costs, according to Gary Palgon, nuBridges' vice president of Product Management and an industry expert on data security. Palgon points to a new data security model-tokenization-that substitutes "tokens" for credit card numbers, taking applications and systems out of scope for both initial compliance requirements and annual audits.
