On June 11, 1971, an article appeared in the Allentown Morning Call describing how a local man, Fritz Sprandel, had been captured and was being held as a pawn in a political game of chess between the United States and Cuba.
Sprandel had set out on a dare in a wood canvas canoe on a trip from New York to Los Angeles via the Panama Canal. Sprandel drifted off course and onto the shores of Cuba. Fidel Castro's severe communist government charged Sprandel with espionage and he was given a revolutionary trial.
Sprandel credits his luck and his faith for his survival. Many people who were tried by the revolutionaries did not live to tell the tale.
