EASTERN GERMANY'S chemical industry has been decimated since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 reunified Germany. Sales by East German chemical producers in 1997 were less than half of what they were eight years ago, and the number of employees in the chemical sector was only one-fifth of that in the late l980s.
Now, however, there are signs that the eastern German chemical industry has started the slow process of recovery. "We think we will have growth over the next few years," says Hans-Joachim Jeschke, chairman of the eastern section of the German chemical industry association (VCI).
