Dan Gajus only has to look at the past to realize there will be a very different future for the solid waste management business.
"The garbage industry as we know it has been in existence for just over a century. We have transitioned from horse carts to the first motorized vehicles in the late 1800s to open dump trucks to covered body vehicles to the use of compaction, said Gajus, an area sales manager for Republic Services Inc. who is based in Lexington, Ky.
"We've gone from manual labor to mechanical cart dumpers to automated collection arms. The industry has come a very long way in a very short period of time, he said.
