QUESTION What is the history of the RTE Concert Orchestra? And has it made many tours to other countries? THE RTE Concert Orchestra was founded in 1948 as the Radio Eireann Light Orchestra; it was initially a small ensemble, with just 22 players.
For the first 30 years of its existence, nearly all the orchestra's performances were studio based and it only gave occasional public concerts.
All that changed however in 1978, when Proinnsias O Duinn was appointed principal conductor and the name of the group was changed to the RTE Concert Orchestra.
The repertoire was expanded to include much more modern music, with an emphasis on the lighter side.
