Light-beam soldering technology lends itself to printed circuit boards used in harsh environments.
Sensors and components for products such as automotive electronics are heat-shock tested to verify the reliability of solder joints. Heat shock test conditions for automotive electronics are more severe - temperature cycling of -40 C for 60 minutes to 120 C for 60 minutes - than conditions for general household appliances - temperature cycles of -40 C for 30 minutes to 85 C for 30 minutes. Under the harsh conditions of the automotive environment, solder cracks can be expected, so ensuring solder joint reliability is difficult.
