It was the moment when black stuff took on a whole new meaning for actor Bernard Hill - a close and unfortunate encounter with hair dye.
While making his hair darker for the BBC drama Boys from the Blackstuff, he was left with purple patches on his forehead - which had to be scrubbed off with household cleaner Vim.
The revelation has been made in a new book by make-up artist Maggie Thomas, who worked on most of the top programmes made in the golden age of Midland television.
