Article: BRUSH WITH GREATNESS WATROUS GALLERY EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS THE TALENTS OF SEVERAL CHILDREN'S BOOK ILLUSTRATORS AND EXAMINES THEIR CREATIVE PROCESS.(77 SQUARE SUNDAY)

Byline: Karyn Saemann Special to 77 Square

I t took Nancy Ekholm Burkert nine years to finish the legions of tiny, intricate watercolor brushstrokes of 1989's "Valentine and Orson."

Lois Ehlert's father's work glove was collaged into 2004's "Hands: Growing up to an Artist." And Laura Dronzek's playful illustrations for "Birds," released last February, are clearly by the same hand but less moody and atmospheric than her non-children's paintings, which have been exhibited nationally.

All three artists were illustrating children's books, pouring as much or more care and craft into their work as they would into any other piece they were creating.
