A typical Boeing airplane has hundreds of miles of wire bundled together in harnesses. The harnesses are assembled and installed by hand. The process is time-consuming. Mistakes can be costly or even dangerous.

Then there's setup costs. Wire harness assembly has changed little over the years. The wires are strung together by hand on nails or pegs inserted into plywood "form boards."
