REJECT AFGHANISTAN ESCALATION

Soon the president will decide whether to send more troops to Afghanistan. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal is reported to be asking for 40,000 more. Those of us old enough to remember Vietnam can recall the initial small troop requests in 1965 that eventually resulted in committing 535,000. Everyone knows how that war ended.

Afghanistan is a tribal society of 40,000 rural villages scattered through a largely mountainous country larger than California and New York combined. Security is so bad that the president, widely believed to have stolen the recent election, is derisively referred to as the mayor of Kabul.
