THE COLLECTIONS of the Gardner Museum in Boston are not arranged in accord with the dictates of art historians. Instead Isabella Stewart Gardner designed the museum as a kind of Wunderkammer in which art objects from widely disparate periods and cultures are placed in proximity to one another. As with the Wunderkammer, the intent is to inspire curiosity and stimulate insight by breaking down categorical boundaries.
