THE COLLECTIONS of the Gardner Museum in Boston are not arranged in accord with the dictates of art historians. Instead Isabella Stewart Gardner designed the museum as a kind of Wunderkammer in which art objects from widely disparate periods and cultures are placed in proximity to one another.
