The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has released a statement confirming that in the near future it will have the power to issue fines for breaches of the eight data protection principles embodied in the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA).
Without giving a precise date on which these new powers will come into force, the ICO spokesperson has said that the Government had indicated April 2010 as the probable commencement date.
The statement went on to say that the ICO had been given no indication as to the level of fines.
