IF EVER there are fingers being crossed for the success of a new car, then there''s been none more so than for the sixthgeneration, Ellesmere Port-built Vauxhall Astra.
With hundreds and potentially thousands of job losses on the cards after months of tense negotiations about the future of General Motors Europe, which includes Vauxhall in the UK and Opel in Germany, the efficiency of Vauxhall''s Cheshire plant is being put under the microscope like never before.
After the Canadian group, Magna, backed by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, agreed to buy the group, workers are waiting to find out where the axe will fall.
