WASHINGTON -- After a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended lowering the maximum dose of over-the-counter acetaminophen earlier this year, the makers of some cough and cold products went on the defensive, stressing the safety of their lines.

"All [our] O-T-C products are safe and effective when used as directed on the product labeling," says a spokesman for Novartis Consumer Health Inc., makers of the Triaminic line of cough/cold products. "Consumer safety is our No. 1 priority, and consumers have taken acetaminophen safely when used as directed for more than 45 years."
