Hindustan Construction Co. and U.K.-based engineering and project management firm AMEC PLC have signed an initial agreement for taking up nuclear power projects in India, the companies said Wednesday.

The venture with AMEC will largely focus on consulting services and turnkey implementation of nuclear plants, said Vinayak Deshpande, president and chief operating officer of Hindustan Construction. He said the company expects to eventually employ up to 500 engineers in these activities.

Hindustan Construction has an order backlog worth 10.50 billion rupees ($218 million) for nuclear projects from state-run Nuclear Power Corp. of India Ltd., Mr. Deshpande ...
