Danbury-based FuelCell Energy Inc. has won a $1.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to increase the efficiency of power-generating fuel cells by recovering and reusing more of the heat they generate.

The manufacturer of high-efficiency, ultra-clean power plants using renewable and other fuels will use the funds, which came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the federal energy department, to develop a system using microchannel technology in the "recuperator," a heat exchanger within the fuel cell.
